| Our Mission: To bridge the science and policy of resource management through technologies which support rational and timely decision-making. |
|
The Decision and Communication Technologies Group (DCTG) brings advanced information systems technology to bear upon issues related to government and public affairs. The technologies include (GIS) geographic information systems, (GPS) global positioning systems, remote sensing, sub-pixel analysis and various information distribution systems. Our educational efforts are directed toward simplification of available technologies, technology transfer and the creation of visual products which enhance environmental education. All of the DCTG projects have served to address the growing information needs of the resource management community.
|
The DCTG mission is fulfilled via a project orientation. Project teams include members skilled in various natural resource
disciplines, the social sciences, and information systems. In addition to our multi-disciplinary approach, DCTG blends
general policy needs with the specificity of field work and hands-on training. Our project experience and project proposal
interests focus on the twin themes of research and education. Previous projects have addressed land cover and climate data in
the Southeastern United States, species-level mapping in South Carolina's wetlands and pine stands using sub-pixel image
analysis, and conservation gap analysis mapping in Costa Rica. Each project has involved at least one partnership, and, thus,
reflects the inter-disciplinary functions to which the Strom Thurmond Institute is committed. |
